The laboratory onMetabolism and Mitochondrial function in Physiology and Disease " (MMFPD)  is focused on studying the metabolic implications of chronic diseases such as Obesity, Diabetes, and Cancer. This unit is an association of four independent groups at the University of Barcelona; the group led by Dr. Jose C. Perales, focusing on “Metabolism and Mitochondrial Physiology”, the laboratory of “Integrative Physiology and Energy Metabolism” led by Dr. Pablo Garcia-Rovés, and the newly established  “Cancer metabolism lab" led by Dr. Andrés Méndez-Lucas
and  "Childhood obesity lab" led by 
José Carlos Jiménez Chillarón.

The group has long-standing recognition in their respective areas of expertise, that include: (i) gene delivery of DNA and siRNA to the liver and other tissues, (ii) molecular biology and metabolism of cancer and diabetes-target genes either overexpressed or silenced in vivo and in vitro, (iii) mechanisms of action of life-style intervention, drugs and metabolites in vivo and in vitro,  (iv) the analysis of mitochondrial function, and  (v)  the application of genetics and stable isotope-based metabolomics approaches to investigate the metabolism of tumours in vivo .
